A Specimen of Kis-Janson
A Specimen of Kis-Janson
A type specimen of the Janson Types from D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt Main, Germany. The type was cast from the original matrices of Nicholas Kis (1650–1702), the Hungarian punch cutter responsible for this typeface wrongly attributed to Anton Janson for many years. The specimen shows 12pt, 14pt, 16pt, 20pt; and 12pt & 14pt Small Caps. Referring to the type as ‘Kis-Janson’ is a nod to the printer and scholar Jack Stauffacher and his Greenwood Press. His research and publication Janson: A Definitive Collection was an indispensable tool in studying the different sizes and nuances of this typeface which is unique in every point size because of the hand carved punches. This type was cast by Rainer Gerstenberg, who carried out the legacy of the Stempel type foundry through 2023.
