Love and Work: Lyric Research on Jason Molina
I am very pleased to announce the latest publication by the press, Love and Work: Lyric Research on Jason Molina by Sam Stephenson, a meditation on the life and music of Jason Molina (1973–2013). This singer and songwriter from Lorain, Ohio, created an extremely strong, and singular output of music spanning just over a decade before his disappearance and eventual death in 2013. Molina’s vision matured rapidly through his early adult years, and it included many different musicians who played with his groups Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co., as well as a number of solo recordings which were released. As a fellow Ohioan with a connection to Lake Erie (a subject ever present in his lyrics), Jason’s music has been a cornerstone for me which continually unfolds and becomes stronger with time. He brought an everyday work ethic to his practice of songwriting present in his lyrics throughout his life which serve anyone who truly listens to his continual message of hard work. That 'we are all supposed to try.’ This publication is offered as a gesture to him, and has been an honor to work on from start to finish. More about the book here.
